Castle Howard

Castle Howard is hosting a series of landscape tours throughout 2008 as follows:

 

The Mausoleum Tour, running on Thursday 21 August, is an opportunity to visit the most mysterious building in the landscape, where generations of the Howard family have been buried in the vaults beneath the spectacular chapel. The tour also includes a visit to the interior of the Temple of the Four Winds. Both buildings are not normally open to the public. This tour lasts approximately 2 hours and involves walking across some rough terrain.  Tickets are £21.00 per person.

 

The Monumental Landscape Tour will be taking place on Thursday 10 July.  This circuit walk visits the famous 18th-century monuments in the Castle Howard landscape - the Gatehouse, the Pyramid, the Mausoleum, the Temple of the Four Winds and the lost Temple of Venus. The dramatic interiors of some of these buildings, which are not normally open to the public, include the gigantic bust of Lord William Howard inside the Pyramid, and the chapel and vaults in the Mausoleum. This unforgettable tour lasts approximately 3½ hours and involves walking across some rough terrain.  Tickets are £30.00 per person.

 

A Premium Mausoleum Tour, will take place on Thursday 17th July, 6pm.  Join this exclusive tour of Castle Howard's Mausoleum landscape, led by Dr Ridgway, Principal Curator, to the most mysterious building in the landscape, where generations of the Howard family have been buried in the vaults beneath the spectacular chapel. The tour begins at 6pm, and concludes at 8pm with wine and canapes in the Temple of the Four Winds, enjoying the summer evening.  Tickets must be booked in advance and cost £56, including wine and canapes. 

 

The Waterways Tour, taking place on Tuesday 22 July, is a circuit walk exploring the remarkable water features around Castle Howard, including the Atlas Fountain, the South Waterways, New River Bridge, and Ray Wood Reservoir.  The tour will explain the engineering feats behind the installation of these features, and tell the story of their spectacular restoration. This tour lasts for approximately 2 hours and involves walking across some rough terrain.  Tickets are £21.00 per person.

 

The Woodland Follies Tour, running on Thursday 7th August, takes in some of the hidden follies in adjacent woodland areas.  The tour will start at the Stable Courtyard and include a privileged look inside the Pyramid at the gigantic bust of Lord William Howard, and beyond to the hidden and mysterious follies in Pretty Wood.  From here the tour extends back towards Castle Howard over New River Bridge, to the Temple of the Four Winds, the lost Temple of Venus and through Ray Wood to the Reservoir to observe the mystical carvings on the central plinth.  This memorable journey of discovery lasts approximately 2 ½ hours and involves walking across some rough terrain, tickets cost £30.00.
